C'è un maniaco strangolatore che uccide giovani donne, meglio se prostitute, e Wess Block (Eastwood), investigatore della Omicidi di New Orleans, non sa da che parte cominciare. Comincia a frequentare locali equivoci, bar gay, bordelli, ma del maniaco nessun indizio. Wess è divorziato e vive con le sue due figlie.
