Sophie è una emigrata polacca che ha subito la terribile esperienza del campo di concentramento. Nathan è un intellettuale ebreo ossessionato dall'Olocausto. I due cercano di sopravvivere come possono. Abitano vicino a un giovane scrittore, Stingo, che con il passare del tempo diventa amico di entrambi.
