Lo USS Tiger Shark, sommergibile della Seconda guerra mondiale, dopo aver vagato per lungo tempo nelle acque dell'Atlantico in cerca di sottomarini tedeschi, fa rotta verso casa. Alla fine della lunga e faticosa missione, l'equipaggio riceve l'ordine di accogliere a bordo tre sopravvissuti di una nave ospedaliera britannica che è stata affondata. Tra loro c'è anche un'infermiera e questo inquieta l'equipaggio perché, secondo la leggenda, una donna a bordo di un sottomarino porta sfortuna. E così avviene: il sottomarino non riesce più a tornare in superficie e la sopravvivenza degli uomini è a rischio a causa della scarsità di ossigeno.
