La vita dell'assicuratore Mickey Prohaska (Greg Kinnear) procede a rilento dopo che ha divorziato dalla moglie e fatica a far decollare il suo lavoro, anche per colpa della piccola località montana del Wisconsin in cui vive. Insieme al suo socio Bob Egan, un giorno si imbatte nel vecchio agricoltore Gorvy Hauer (Alan Arkin), a cui cerca di rifilare in tutti i modi una polizza sulla vita e che possiede in casa un antico violino del valore di 25 mila dollari.
