Frederick Bronski, attore teatrale, è membro del governo polacco in esilio a Londra durante l'occupazione tedesca del suo paese. Tornato a Varsavia per eliminare un doppiogiochista, riesce poi a espatriare con tutta la sua compagnia teatrale, aiutandosi con una clamorosa serie di travestimenti. Anche se la regia è firmata da Alan Johnson, Mel Brooks può essere considerato in effetti il vero autore di questo remake del capolavoro Vogliamo vivere di Lubitch, del 1942. Il soggetto gli consente di dare fondo in modo intelligente a tutto suo il repertorio farsesco.
