Western Australia, 1971. Una sera, il camionista Tom (Luke Ford) arriva a Dampier, un paese di minatori nel nord ovest dell'Australia, e trova tutti gli uomini del posto - perlopiù immigrati di tutto il mondo accorsi alla località sperduta nella speranza di uno stipendio - riuniti in un bar a discutere sulla necessità o meno di abbattere un cane dal manto fulvo, ormai malato. Chiedendosi il perché di tante preoccupazioni per un animale, Jack (Noah Taylor) gli racconta la storia legata al "cane rosso" sin dal suo arrivo in città e cosa rappresenti per tutti quanti, soffermandosi sugli anni che ha passato alla ricerca per tutta l'Australia di John Grant (Josh Lucas), l'autista di autobus per minatori a cui il cane si era legato che, prima di morire la notte del suo fidanzamento con Nancy (Rachael Taylor) in un incidente stradale, lo aveva salutato chiedendogli di aspettare il suo ritorno.
