Iris fa l'operaia in una fabbrica di dolciumi. È rimasta vedova con due figli da mantenere, ed ha altri parenti che pesano sul suo bilancio. Incontra Stanley, un cuoco timido, incapace di scrivere persino il proprio nome perché, figlio di un ambulante, non ha mai potuto frequentare le scuole. Proprio perché analfabeta, Stanley viene licenziato. Tra i due nasce l'amore, rinforzato (ma a volte anche messo in pericolo) dal rapporto ulteriore che si crea fra di loro, quello di insegnante e discepolo: infatti Iris fa da maestra a Stanley che impara faticosamente a leggere e a scrivere. Dopo molte umiliazioni l'uomo si assicura un impiego di prestigio e offre la sua mano a Iris, dopo averle scritto appassionate lettere d'amore.
