A New Orleans, la vita di Nick Gerard (Nicolas Cage) è sempre trascorsa in maniera pacifica. L’uomo insegna inglese in un college ed è felicemente sposato con Laura da un paio d’anni. Una sera, la moglie rimane vittima di un’aggressione e Nick in ospedale è avvicinato da Nick (Guy Pearce), il capo di un gruppo di vigilantes operanti in semiclandestinità, che gli garantisce la possibilità di ritrovare il colpevole e farsi giustizia.
