Nel corso della Seconda guerra mondiale, il capitano dell'aviazione americana Yossarian, ossessionato dall'idea di poter perdere la vita nel corso di una delle tante missioni di volo, cerca di farsi passare per pazzo. Ma, per sua sfortuna, non viene creduto ed è costretto a vedere tutte le assurdità che la guerra, inevitabilmente, lascia dietro sé: gli inutili massacri, l'obbedienza cieca e gli ordini privi di logica.
