Una sera tre teppisti entrano in casa dell'architetto Paul Kersey, uccidono sua moglie e violentano la figlia che finisce in manicomio. A quel punto, abbandonato anche il lavoro, Paul comincia a pensare di farsi giustizia da solo. La sua nuova attività di giustiziere privato ha un successo strepitoso. La gente comune parteggia per lui e gli stessi criminali cominciano a temerlo. Poi un poliziotto più testardo di altri scopre la sua identità e lo convince a smettere.
