Nel 1929, in piena epoca proibizionista, i tre fratelli Bondurant diventano noti in tutta la contea di Franklin, in Virginia, per aver ereditato dal padre il controllo del contrabbando di alcolici. A occuparsi in prima persona degli affari e dei rapporti con la malavita è il cinico e feroce Forrest (Tom Hardy), il maggiore dei tre, mentre Howard (Jason Carke) sembra disinteressarsi a ogni attività a causa dei fantasmi che continuano a tormentarlo dopo aver preso parte alla prima guerra mondiale e il piccolo Jack (Shia LaBeouf), amante del lusso sfrenato e delle belle donne, sogna di mettersi in proprio e rendersi indipendente da Forrest. Impegnati a respingere gli attacchi dell'agente speciale Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), i Bondurant finiscono con l'essere coinvolti in un susseguirsi di innamoramenti, tragedie familiari e omicidi che mandano in rovina l'impero costruito dal padre.
